A kinematic mechanism for positive feedback between synoptic eddies and NAO

چکیده
[1] A kinematic mechanism for the positive feedback between the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and synoptic eddies are depicted based on observational data analyses. Using three-point rescaled covariance statistics of bandpass-filtered (2–8 days) synoptic eddy fields, we examined observed eddy structure changes associated with wintermean NAO anomalous flow. It is demonstrated that the NAO flow anomalies systematically deform the structures of recurring synoptic eddies to generate seasonal-mean eddyvorticity flux anomalies predominately directed to the lefthand side of the NAO flow anomalies. These anomalous eddy-vorticity fluxes converge into the cyclonic center and diverge from the anticyclonic center of the anomalous NAO flow, and thus enhance the NAO flow. Citation: Ren, H.-L., F.-F. Dynamics of Eddy-Driven Low-Frequency Dipole Modes. Part II: Free Mode Characteristics of NAO and Diagnostic Study
Through calculating the scatter diagrams of the streamfunction ( P or T) versus potential vorticity (PV) (qP or qT), where P and T are the planetary-scale streamfunction and total streamfunction, respectively, and using a weakly nonlinear NAO model proposed in Part I of this paper, it is suggested that negativeand positive-phase NAO events may approximately correspond to free modes even though ...

[1] In this paper, by using a dynamic model with synoptic eddy and low-frequency flow (SELF) interaction, we show that the SELF feedback is of significant importance for the formation of the AO/NAO in both winter and summer. Although background storm activity is significantly weaker in summer than that in winter, the positive SELF feedback associated with the AO/NAO mode in summer can be as str...
متن کاملLeft-hand rule for synoptic eddy feedback on low-frequency flow
[1] In this study, scale interaction between synoptic eddies and low-frequency flow is investigated. The synoptic eddy feedback is a key process in sustaining the low-frequency flow. We show clear evidence using NCEP reanalysis data that there is a general underlying rule—the ‘‘left-hand rule’’, governing the synoptic eddy feedback onto low-frequency flow. This rule states that eddy-vorticity f...
متن کاملDynamics of Synoptic Eddy and Low-Frequency Flow Interaction. Part II: A Theory for Low-Frequency Modes
Amidst stormy atmospheric circulation, there are prominent recurrent patterns of variability in the planetary circulation, such as the Antarctic Oscillation (AAO), Arctic Oscillation (AO) or North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the Pacific–North America (PNA) pattern. The role of the synoptic eddy and low-frequency flow (SELF) feedback in the formation of these dominant low-frequency modes is ...
